Start with the house: 2,150 sq. ft. is the TN norm, and at that size the load math points to a 4-ton system, about 45,000 BTU. The best-value rating here is 16 SEER, at $10,020 to $12,070 installed. Other ratings either cost more to run or cost more than they save in TN.

Tennessee sits in Climate Zone 3: summer highs average 89.4°F, so an AC here runs about 12.3 hours a day over a season of roughly 123 days. On a 16 SEER unit that is about 4,709 kWh – near $780 a year at today's rates.

We price one central AC or heat pump on working ductwork. Big houses often split the load across two systems, and ductless heads are a separate quote.

20 SEER$21,270 – $25,640$12,9203,858 kWh$640

In TN, the realistic starting point is 16 SEER: federal rules for the southern region keep 14 SEER units off new installs. Expect $10,020 to $12,070 for 16 SEER, about $6,210 of it equipment, and 4,709 kWh a season. A heat pump cools at the same SEER and heats as well – see the heat pump calculator.

Ten Summers of Cooling Costs in Tennessee

Electricity in Tennessee costs $0.165/kWh right now, 24% below the national average of $0.217. Over the past decade the TN rate rose about 2.15% a year. If that trend holds, power will cost near $0.20/kWh by 2036, and a 16 SEER unit will cost about $960 a year to run.

Ten seasons on a 9 SEER unit: about $15,120. Ten seasons on 16 SEER: about $8,540. Point at any year for the exact split.

In Tennessee, where new systems start above 14 SEER, 16 SEER has the lowest ten-year cost: $19,420 with ten summers of power.

Cheapest over 10 years in Tennessee: 16 SEER at $19,420 all-in, made of $10,890 to install plus $8,540 to run.

Includes energy inflation: electricity = this season's cost at today's TN rate, then each of the next nine seasons raised by the historic 2.15%/yr rate increase. Install = the typical installed price on this page. Each figure is rounded up to the next $10 on its own, so the two parts can add up to $10 more than the total. 14 SEER is left out: it is below the federal minimum for new central AC installs in Tennessee.

Expect about $190 a month for cooling in season: 1,149 kWh from a 3.11 kW system running some 12.3 hours a day, priced at $0.165.

Is 18 or 20 SEER Worth It in Tennessee?

Expect $15,640 to $18,850 for an 18 SEER system in Tennessee. It cools the same house on about 4,236 kWh a season, against the 4,709 kWh a 16 SEER unit needs.

Shopping in the Nashville area? An 18 SEER install there runs about $16,250 to $19,590.

The 20 SEER range in Tennessee is $21,270 to $25,640. Name brands add more on top: about $31,210 for a Lennox XP20, past $41,150 for an SL25XPV.

Tip: Lennox and Armstrong Air share a parent company. If a Lennox model appeals to you, price its Armstrong counterpart too.

In a TN season a 20 SEER system draws about 3,858 kWh, 27% less than the 14 SEER baseline and 54% less than 9 SEER. Here the extra cost outruns the saving over ten years, so it is a comfort choice, not a money choice.

How Tennessee's Climate Shapes Your AC

Zone 3 and warm summers mean a larger-than-average system here. Other parts of TN weather matter as much as size.

U.S. climate regions map (1 cool to 5 hot)

Climate zones run from 1 (cool) to 5 (hot); Tennessee is in Zone 3.

Moisture load. Sticky TN weather rewards equipment that runs longer at lower speed, because it pulls more water out of the air. Ask the installer how the system handles humidity, not just temperature.

Severe storms. Thunderstorms and high winds throw debris and cut power. Secure the outdoor unit, keep loose items away from it, and add surge protection.

The heating question. With winter lows near 28°F, many TN homes pair the AC with a furnace. If you are replacing both, price a heat pump: one machine heats and cools.

Timing: replace before the unit fails, ideally in the cooler months, when Tennessee contractors have open calendars.

How SEER Ratings Work

SEER is the cooling a unit delivers over a season divided by the electricity it uses. Higher SEER, same cooling, smaller bill.

The math also works in reverse. A 45,000 BTU system rated 16 SEER draws about 45,000 ÷ 16 = 2,813 W at the compressor. Add roughly 300 W for the indoor blower, and the whole system pulls about 3.11 kW while running.

Newer labels show SEER2, a stricter test that prints a slightly lower number for the same machine. Compare SEER to SEER, or SEER2 to SEER2.
