About RemodelCalcs: Contractor-Built Cost Calculators (2027)
RemodelCalcs is a set of free cost calculators for home projects, built by working contractors. Enter your measurements and material choices, and you get a realistic price range for materials and labor on a roof, furnace, floor or kitchen. You’ll know what the job should cost before the first quote arrives, so an inflated bid stands out right away.
How to Use Our Calculators
- Pick the right tool. Use the calculator for your trade. For a project that touches several rooms, start with the whole-house remodel calculator to see the total, then price each part on its own page.
- Measure first. Square footage, roof area, window count. A guessed number gets you a guessed price.
- Describe the job as it really is. Choose the material grade you’d actually buy, and flag steep roofs, old layers to tear off and hard access. Those details change the labor cost.
- Treat the result as a range, not a quote. Most calculator pages also carry a cost guide we keep up to date, so read it before you decide.
- Check it against real bids. Once you have your number, request free quotes from local pros and see where they fall.
Every estimate is tailored to your location, and typically lands within 5-10% of what a reputable local contractor would charge. The difference comes from things no online tool can fully see:
- Your zip code and how busy local contractors are
- Regional labor rates and the local economy
- Which company you hire (some simply charge more)
- The brand and quality tier you pick
- Rot, tough access and other surprises
Where the Numbers Come From
Our pricing starts with how contractors in most trades actually build a bid, which I learned pricing my own jobs. I also trade notes with other pros on contractor forums and follow the industry surveys that track regional labor costs.
What you see is a blended average from hundreds of working contractors nationwide, checked and updated regularly.
The Contractor Behind RemodelCalcs
I’m Leo Bander. I started contracting in 2003, and today a small crew of tradespeople and I run this site. My work has covered:
- Residential and commercial roofing: shingle, metal, low-slope and flat
- Vinyl, wood and fiber cement siding
- General contracting
- Oil and gas heating, and HVAC
- Electrical work
I’ve also finished formal solar PV installer training and hold an electrician’s training certificate. These days I spend less time on ladders and more on HVAC and solar. That’s why you’ll find an HVAC load calculator here right next to the roof replacement calculator.
I own a house too, and I don’t do every job on it myself. Drywall and plaster I hire out, so I know the buyer’s side well: comparing quotes and wondering whether a price makes sense. That’s the problem this site is built to solve.
