How to Use the Siding Calculator
Ten minutes with a tape measure keeps the estimate honest. Work down the form:
- Length and width. Measure the footprint at ground level, corner to corner. Round up, never down: a wall reading 31′ 4″ goes in as 32′. Rounding down is how you get a figure lower than every real bid.
- Number of floors. Pick the house type closest to yours. Upper floors mean scaffolding and slower work.
- Roof slope. This sizes your gables, the walls rising to a peak under the roof. The calculator puts them on the shorter ends and figures each triangle from that width plus your pitch. If your peaks face the long sides, expect more wall than the estimate shows.
- Siding material. Run the form once for each material on your list and compare.
- New insulation. Choose what goes under the new siding, from backer board to extruded foam.
- House difficulty. A plain box is simple. Bump-outs, bays or a trim-heavy Victorian belong in medium or difficult. Every extra corner eats labor.
- Remove old siding. Pick what’s coming off, and tear-off is priced in. Choose No for new construction, or when vinyl is going over wood.
- Window and door wraps. Count the openings whose frames will be wrapped in aluminum coil stock. The calculator figures roughly $92 to $132 each.
Finding roof pitch: Hold a 2-foot level flat in the attic with one end touching a rafter. Measure straight up from the free end to the rafter and halve it. A 10″ reading means a 5/12 pitch, entered as 5. Hip or flat roof? Choose “flat,” since there are no gables to side.
Tear Off the Old Siding or Cover It?
Old vinyl, aluminum or plastic siding has to come off before new vinyl goes up. Wood is the exception; vinyl can hang right over it. Any other new material means stripping walls to the sheathing. Tear-off usually adds $1,770 to $5,110, depending on how much comes down and what it’s made of. Wood sits at the top of that range.
Asbestos shingles are a different story. The cheapest, safest move is usually leaving them in place and installing vinyl over the top. Removal takes a certified abatement crew that seals the work area to contain dust, and it can push the total far past what the calculator shows. Never let a regular siding crew pull them.

How Much Does It Cost to Reside a House?

Switch to James Hardie fiber cement and you’re looking at roughly $20,580 to $29,720, depending on trim and how cut-up the walls are. In other words, fiber cement can nearly double the bill.

What Else Moves the Final Bid?
Wall area and material are the two biggest numbers on any quote, and the calculator handles both. A few more things shift the price:
- Trim and extras. Fascia, crown and corner boards are priced by the linear foot, and a trim-heavy house adds up fast.
- Location. By region, the calculator runs from about 12% under the national average in the South Central states to about 11% over on the Pacific coast. Pricey metros can go higher still.
- Labor rates. Big-city installers on either coast often bill somewhere around $84 to $120 an hour, more for fussy materials. Across much of the South and Midwest, $54 to $102 an hour is more typical.
If the windows are tired anyway, price them with the window replacement calculator so the trim gets wrapped once, not twice.
Who Should You Hire?
Large, established outfits charge top dollar and rarely negotiate because they don’t need your job. Mid-size contractors usually give you the most for your money. Whoever you choose, check references and confirm a license and insurance first.

Siding FAQ
Does new siding pay off at resale?
Better than most exterior projects. National cost-versus-value surveys usually have basic vinyl recovering something like 70 to 80% of its cost at sale. Fiber cement, engineered wood and real wood often do a little better and do more for curb appeal.
How long will it last?
Material sets the ceiling: vinyl at the short end, natural stone at a century or more. Climate decides how close you get. Heavy rain, snow, big temperature swings and harsh sun all wear siding faster, and routine upkeep stretches any of them.
