How to Use the Countertop Calculator

Each field matches a line a fabricator will put on your bid.

1. Countertop Size. Measure each counter run in feet and multiply by 2, since standard tops are about 2 ft deep. Measure an island as length times width. Add 4 sq ft for each inside corner. The result already includes a flat job charge of about $373 for templating and setup, which nearly every shop bills in some form.
2. New Countertop. Nothing else moves the total as much. On the same 40 sq ft, basic laminate and premium quartz land about $3,960 apart.
3. Countertop Color. Leave it on Basic until you’ve seen samples. Shops sort slabs into price groups (here Basic, Better and Premium), and you won’t know which group your favorite is in until you ask.
4. Edge Profile. Basic (A) or Better (B) suits most kitchens. On laminate, a fancy edge costs a fraction of the same profile in granite, so a Premium edge on laminate will read a little high.
5. Cut Cooktop Opening. Pick Yes if a drop-in cooktop sits in the counter. Figure about $863 for that opening.

The calculator doesn’t ask about tear-out or layout. Add to the number if the old tops have to come out, or if you have several corners, an angled corner sink, odd cutouts, or want stone with as few seams as possible. All of that eats shop hours.

How Much Do Countertops Cost per Square Foot?

Most kitchens have about 40 sq ft of counter. Granite or quartz on that space usually runs about $3,060 to $5,900 installed, materials and labor included.

Each range runs from a basic slab with a plain edge to a premium slab with a fancy edge, shop charge included. Grade and edge move the price almost as much as the material does. Builder-grade granite starts near $76.50 a sq ft; a premium slab with an upgraded edge can top $134.50. Same stone, close to double the money.

Where the Labor Money Goes

Labor is often around half the bill, sometimes more, and a choppy layout pushes that share up fast.

Heavy stone costs more to set. Granite and marble need extra hands, and one bad move cracks a slab, so crews price in that risk. An upgraded edge adds roughly $22 to $32 a sq ft on its own.

Check the complexity charge on every bid. A straight run with one sink shouldn’t carry a premium.

Do new counters pay off at resale?

Usually. Quartz and granite tend to win back a good share of their cost at sale time. Laminate and butcher block recoup less, but they cost far less going in. On a rental, fresh tops make a dated kitchen look current without a gut job.

How do I keep the price down?

Drop a color tier, keep a standard edge, and accept a seam or two. Getting three bids saves more than haggling over one.

How long does installation take?

It comes in stages: templating, cutting at the shop, then a separate install visit. Lead times vary a lot, so ask each fabricator.
