Every price on this page is built around a 2,060 sq. ft. home, the common size in Nevada, cooled by a 3.5-ton system of about 42,000 BTU. A contractor-installed 16 SEER unit runs $9,560 to $11,520 in Nevada. On ten-year cost of ownership – price plus electricity – it comes out ahead of every other rating we priced.

Cooling season in NV lasts around 123 days, with afternoon highs near 91.4°F (Zone 3). Expect the compressor to run about 12.3 hours on a typical day. That adds up to some 4,425 kWh, roughly $670 a year on a 16 SEER system.

We price one central AC or heat pump on working ductwork. Big houses often split the load across two systems, and ductless heads are a separate quote.

What a New Central AC Costs in Nevada

Here is what a 3.5-ton install costs in Nevada at each efficiency level. Equipment is about 58% of a 14 SEER bid; labor, refrigerant lines, the pad and electrical work make up the rest.

3.5-ton systemInstalledEquipmentPower / seasonCooling / yr
14 SEER$7,580 – $9,130$4,7604,993 kWh$760
16 SEER$9,560 – $11,520$5,9404,425 kWh$670
18 SEER$15,460 – $18,640$9,4603,984 kWh$600
20 SEER$20,820 – $25,100$12,6503,631 kWh$550

New central ACs in Nevada must meet the federal Southeast/Southwest efficiency minimum, which 14 SEER equipment misses. In practice 16 SEER, at $9,560 to $11,520 with $5,940 of hardware, is the entry point; it uses about 4,425 kWh a season. A heat pump cools at the same SEER and heats as well – see the heat pump calculator.

Which SEER Pays Off in Nevada?

Two numbers set your running cost: the $0.150/kWh NV rate (31% below the $0.217 national average) and how fast it grows – historically about 3.9% a year here. The chart applies both to each SEER rating.

Point at a year (or tap it on a phone) for the season cost of every rating. The lines climb 3.9% a year, matching how NV electric rates moved over the last decade.

Starting point: this summer at NV's current rate. From there the rate grows 3.9% per year, compounded, and each season cost is rounded up to $10.

Over the next ten summers, keeping a 9 SEER unit costs about $14,080 in electricity; a 16 SEER system needs about $7,960 for the same cooling.

Set the two menus: the system in your house now and the one you are weighing. The math uses a 3.5-ton unit at Nevada electric rates, $0.150/kWh and climbing 3.9% yearly.

Savings alone fall short: 9 to 16 SEER is still $4,270 behind after 10 summers in NV.

With 14 SEER off the table here, 16 SEER is the value pick for Nevada, at $18,350 over ten years.

Cheapest over 10 years in Nevada: 16 SEER at $18,350 all-in, made of $10,390 to install plus $7,960 to run.

Includes energy inflation: electricity = this season's cost at today's NV rate, then each of the next nine seasons raised by the historic 3.9%/yr rate increase. Install = the typical installed price on this page. Each figure is rounded up to the next $10 on its own, so the two parts can add up to $10 more than the total. 14 SEER is left out: it is below the federal minimum for new central AC installs in Nevada.

Monthly math for Nevada: 2.93 kW × 12.3 h/day × 30 days ≈ 1,079 kWh. At $0.150 per kWh, that is roughly $170 a month.

High-Efficiency Systems: 18 and 20+ SEER

An 18 SEER system costs $15,460 to $18,640 installed in NV. It trims the season to about 3,984 kWh and runs longer at low speed, which also evens out room temperatures.

Shopping in the Las Vegas area? An 18 SEER install there runs about $16,050 to $19,350.

Top-tier systems are where bids spread widest. Figure $20,820 to $25,100 for 20 SEER in Nevada; premium Lennox models run about $30,550 (XP20) and $40,280 or more (SL25XPV).

Tip: Lennox and Armstrong Air share a parent company. If a Lennox model appeals to you, price its Armstrong counterpart too.

In a NV season a 20 SEER system draws about 3,631 kWh, 27% less than the 14 SEER baseline and 54% less than 9 SEER. At NV rates that saving does not cover the premium within ten years.

Climate Factors for Cooling in Nevada

Zone 3 and warm summers mean a larger-than-average system here. Other parts of NV weather matter as much as size.

U.S. climate regions map (1 cool to 5 hot)

Climate zones run from 1 (cool) to 5 (hot); Nevada is in Zone 3.

Dry heat. Long, hot days mean long run hours, so efficiency pays back faster here than in most states. Ducts in a hot attic can lose much of the cooling; have them sealed and insulated when the system is replaced.

Wildfire risk. Keep dry brush and debris clear of the condenser, and plan for smoky weeks with a tighter filter and a fresh-air intake you can close.

Monsoon season. Humid spells late in summer make evaporative coolers weak, which is one reason many NV homes rely on refrigerated AC.

When to buy: late fall and winter are the slow months for NV installers, so scheduling is easier and you are not shopping during an emergency.

What SEER Means for Your Bill

A SEER rating answers one question: how much cooling per unit of electricity? Divide capacity by SEER and you get the draw.

Here: 42,000 BTU ÷ 16 SEER ≈ 2,625 W, plus about 300 W for the blower – roughly 2.93 kW whenever the system runs. Multiply by hours and your rate and you have the bill.

Labels may say SEER2 instead. It is the same idea under a tougher test, so the number is a bit lower for identical equipment.
