Most homes in California come in near 1,860 sq. ft. Size the cooling to that and you get about 42,000 BTU of capacity, which the trade sells as a 3.5-ton unit. Installed with labor and parts, a 16 SEER system costs $11,030 to $13,290 in CA. That is the efficiency level where purchase price and power bills balance out best in this state.

Zone 4 weather gives California hot summers, with highs averaging 92.4°F. Our model counts about 13.3 hours of daily run time across a 133-day season, so a 16 SEER unit uses about 5,174 kWh, roughly $1,960 of electricity a year.

Figures assume one ducted central system. Ductless mini-splits are priced on their own, and homes that need more than five tons usually get two smaller units.

Central AC Installation Cost in California

Here is what a 3.5-ton install costs in California at each efficiency level. Equipment is about 58% of a 14 SEER bid; labor, refrigerant lines, the pad and electrical work make up the rest.

3.5-ton systemInstalledEquipmentPower / seasonCooling / yr
14 SEER$8,740 – $10,540$5,4905,837 kWh$2,210
16 SEER$11,030 – $13,290$6,8505,174 kWh$1,960
18 SEER$17,840 – $21,500$10,9104,658 kWh$1,760
20 SEER$24,020 – $28,950$14,5904,245 kWh$1,610

Because California falls in the federal southern efficiency region, new systems start above 14 SEER. A 16 SEER install runs $11,030 to $13,290 ($6,850 in hardware) and needs about 5,174 kWh a season. A heat pump cools at the same SEER and heats as well – see the heat pump calculator.

Does a Higher SEER Pay Off in California?

Electricity in California costs $0.377/kWh right now, 74% above the national average of $0.217. Over the past decade the CA rate rose about 6.26% a year. If that trend holds, power will cost near $0.69/kWh by 2036, and a 16 SEER unit will cost about $3,590 a year to run.

Starting point: this summer at CA's current rate. From there the rate grows 6.26% per year, compounded, and each season cost is rounded up to $10.

Each line compounds the 6.26% yearly rate rise. By year ten a 9 SEER unit costs $6,340 a season to run here, against $3,590 for 16 SEER.

Payback counts the 6.26% yearly rate rise; the green column is the best ten-year value. Reference only: a 14 SEER central AC can no longer be newly installed in California, which sits in the federal southern efficiency region.

In California, where new systems start above 14 SEER, 16 SEER has the lowest ten-year cost: $38,030 with ten summers of power.

Cheapest over 10 years in California: 16 SEER at $38,030 all-in, made of $11,990 to install plus $26,050 to run.

Energy inflation is built in: season one is priced at today's CA rate, and each of the nine seasons after it costs 6.26% more than the one before, the historic yearly increase. The install figure is the typical installed price on this page. Parts and totals are each rounded up to $10, so the parts may sum $10 above the total. 14 SEER is left out: it is below the federal minimum for new central AC installs in California.

The formula is draw × hours × rate. A 3.5-ton 16 SEER system draws about 2.93 kW; at 13.3 hours a day for 30 days that is about 1,167 kWh, or $450 a month at $0.377/kWh.

Premium Efficiency in California: 18 SEER and Up

California bids for 18 SEER run $17,840 to $21,500. Most of the premium buys the compressor and controls, and the saving shows up as about 4,658 kWh a season instead of 5,174.

In Los Angeles-size metros, an 18 SEER system carries the same premium: about $18,910 to $22,790 installed.

A 3.5-ton 20 SEER heat pump costs $24,020 to $28,950 in CA. Brand matters at this level: a Lennox XP20 can cost $35,240, and the SL25XPV more than $46,470.

Tip: Armstrong Air belongs to the same parent company as Lennox and is often quoted lower for comparable equipment. Ask for both prices.

In a CA season a 20 SEER system draws about 4,245 kWh, 27% less than the 14 SEER baseline and 54% less than 9 SEER. Here the extra cost outruns the saving over ten years, so it is a comfort choice, not a money choice.

Built for California Summers and Winters

California falls in Zone 4 on the climate map, with hot summers. That sets a larger-than-average system for the square footage, and local weather adds a few more things to plan for.

U.S. climate regions map (1 cool to 5 hot)

Climate zones run from 1 (cool) to 5 (hot); California is in Zone 4.

Dry heat. Long, hot days mean long run hours, so efficiency pays back faster here than in most states. Ducts in a hot attic can lose much of the cooling; have them sealed and insulated when the system is replaced.

Smoky summers. Ash and smoke clog coils and filters fast. Change filters more often in fire season, and ask whether your air handler can take a better one.

Shoreline homes. Salt-laden air eats outdoor coils. A protective coil coating and a regular fresh-water rinse keep a coastal CA system running longer.

When to buy: late fall and winter are the slow months for CA installers, so scheduling is easier and you are not shopping during an emergency.

How SEER Ratings Work

Think of SEER as miles per gallon for cooling: BTUs of heat removed per watt-hour of power, averaged over a season.

For the 42,000 BTU system this page prices, 16 SEER works out to 2,625 W of compressor draw (42,000 ÷ 16). The fan adds about 300 W, for roughly 2.93 kW in total.

Shopping tip: equipment rated under the newer rules carries a SEER2 number, which reads lower than old-style SEER for the same unit.

Ask for a written Manual J. Bigger is not better: an oversized system costs more and controls humidity worse.
