A typical Utah house has about 2,800 sq. ft., and cooling that much space takes roughly 60,000 BTU – a 5-ton central system. A contractor-installed 14 SEER unit runs $9,600 to $11,570 in Utah. On ten-year cost of ownership – price plus electricity – it comes out ahead of every other rating we priced.

Cooling season in UT lasts around 113 days, with afternoon highs near 89.7°F (Zone 2). Expect the compressor to run about 10.3 hours on a typical day. That adds up to some 4,714 kWh, roughly $730 a year on a 16 SEER system.

These prices cover a single central system on existing ducts. Split-zone homes and ductless setups price differently.

Price of a New AC System in Utah, by Efficiency

Each row is the same 5-ton job in UT; only the efficiency changes. Watch the running-cost column: it shrinks as the price climbs.

5-ton systemInstalledEquipmentPower / seasonCooling / yr
14 SEER$9,600 – $11,570$5,9605,337 kWh$830
16 SEER$11,220 – $13,520$6,9304,714 kWh$730
18 SEER$17,640 – $21,260$10,7504,229 kWh$660
20 SEER$23,310 – $28,100$14,1403,841 kWh$600

At 16 SEER you can choose a conventional AC or a heat pump; the cooling draw is the same. Either way, Utah buyers pay $11,220 to $13,520, against $9,600 to $11,570 for the 14 SEER baseline. Thinking about a heat pump instead? Our heat pump calculator prices one for your home.

Running Cost vs. Price: the UT Math

Two numbers set your running cost: the $0.155/kWh UT rate (29% below the $0.217 national average) and how fast it grows – historically about 0.45% a year here. The chart applies both to each SEER rating.

Projected Cost to Run a 9-20 SEER AC in UT, Next 10 Years

Point at a year (or tap it on a phone) for the season cost of every rating. The lines climb 0.45% a year, matching how UT electric rates moved over the last decade.

The first point applies UT's current rate to this season; every point after it adds another year of the 0.45% average increase. Dollar figures are rounded up to the next $10.

Each line compounds the 0.45% yearly rate rise. By year ten a 9 SEER unit costs $1,360 a season to run here, against $870 for 14 SEER.

Not on savings alone: 9 to 14 SEER is $5,670 short after 10 summers in UT.

If the old unit still works, the full install price is the cost of the upgrade. If it has to be replaced anyway, the 14 SEER comparison table below is the better guide.

At UT prices, 14 SEER is the value pick: each step up costs more than it saves in ten summers.

Between a 14 and an 18 SEER quote, the extra $8,750 takes about 46.0 years to return at Utah rates.

Lowest 10-year total in Utah: 14 SEER, $18,850 ($10,430 up front, $8,420 in electricity).

How the electricity bar is built: this season at today's UT rate, then nine more seasons, each raised by the 0.45% yearly increase UT has averaged. Install is the typical price shown on this page. Every figure is rounded up to the next $10 separately, which can leave the parts $10 over the total.

Expect about $220 a month for cooling in season: 1,417 kWh from a 4.59 kW system running some 10.3 hours a day, priced at $0.155.

Premium Efficiency in Utah: 18 SEER and Up

Expect $17,640 to $21,260 for an 18 SEER system in Utah. It cools the same house on about 4,229 kWh a season, against the 4,714 kWh a 16 SEER unit needs.

In Salt Lake City-size metros, an 18 SEER system carries the same premium: about $18,030 to $21,730 installed.

At 20 SEER and above, prices climb fast: $23,310 to $28,100 for a 5-ton system here. Flagship lines go higher – a Lennox XP20 heat pump can reach $34,210, and the variable-capacity SL25XPV tops $45,100.

Tip: Armstrong Air belongs to the same parent company as Lennox and is often quoted lower for comparable equipment. Ask for both prices.

Compared on electricity alone, 20 SEER wins: 3,841 kWh a season, a 28% cut from 14 SEER and 54% from 9 SEER. In Utah, though, the price premium is bigger than the ten-year saving.

What UT Weather Asks of an AC

Beyond size (a larger-than-average unit for a Zone 2 home), Utah's climate affects which equipment and options are worth paying for.

U.S. climate regions map (1 cool to 5 hot)

Climate zones run from 1 (cool) to 5 (hot); Utah is in Zone 2.

Dry heat. Long, hot days mean long run hours, so efficiency pays back faster here than in most states. Ducts in a hot attic can lose much of the cooling; have them sealed and insulated when the system is replaced.

High elevation. At altitude, air-side capacity drops. A load calculation done for your elevation avoids an undersized system.

Smoke season. During wildfire smoke the system recirculates indoor air, so the filter does the work. A higher-MERV filter helps if your blower and filter slot can handle it; ask the installer.

Timing: the off-season for cooling is the best time to get several Utah quotes and compare them calmly.

SEER Explained in Plain Numbers

A SEER rating answers one question: how much cooling per unit of electricity? Divide capacity by SEER and you get the draw.

Here: 60,000 BTU ÷ 14 SEER ≈ 4,286 W, plus about 300 W for the blower – roughly 4.59 kW whenever the system runs. Multiply by hours and your rate and you have the bill.

Labels may say SEER2 instead. It is the same idea under a tougher test, so the number is a bit lower for identical equipment.
