Most homes in Oregon come in near 1,940 sq. ft. Size the cooling to that and you get about 42,000 BTU of capacity, which the trade sells as a 3.5-ton unit. Budget $8,740 to $10,540 for a 14 SEER system, all-in. At Oregon electric rates, that rating returns the most money over ten summers.

Plan for about 123 days of cooling a year in OR, around 12.3 hours a day, under 83.7°F average highs. A 16 SEER system turns that into about 4,425 kWh, so cooling costs near $800 a year here.

We price one central AC or heat pump on working ductwork. Big houses often split the load across two systems, and ductless heads are a separate quote.

20 SEER$24,020 – $28,950$14,5903,631 kWh$660

Think of 14 SEER as the floor and 16 SEER as the workhorse. In OR the first costs $8,740 to $10,540, the second $11,030 to $13,290 – and the 16 runs about $110 a year cheaper. A heat pump cools at the same SEER and heats as well – see the heat pump calculator.

Ten Summers of Cooling Costs in Oregon

OR households pay $0.179 for each kWh, 17% below the national $0.217. Ten years of 2.72% yearly increases would put that near $0.23 by 2036, and turn today's $1,410 bill on an old 9 SEER unit into about $1,840 a year.

Verdict for OR: 14 SEER. Higher ratings cut the bill, but not by enough to cover their cost here.

Between a 14 and an 18 SEER quote, the extra $9,890 takes about 33.9 years to return at Oregon rates.

Cheapest over 10 years in Oregon: 14 SEER at $19,630 all-in, made of $9,500 to install plus $10,140 to run.

Includes energy inflation: electricity = this season's cost at today's OR rate, then each of the next nine seasons raised by the historic 2.72%/yr rate increase. Install = the typical installed price on this page. Each figure is rounded up to the next $10 on its own, so the two parts can add up to $10 more than the total.

The formula is draw × hours × rate. A 3.5-ton 14 SEER system draws about 3.3 kW; at 12.3 hours a day for 30 days that is about 1,218 kWh, or $220 a month at $0.179/kWh.

Is 18 or 20 SEER Worth It in Oregon?

Variable-speed 18 SEER equipment is the comfort upgrade: steadier temperatures, quieter running, better moisture control. In Oregon it costs $17,840 to $21,500 and draws about 3,984 kWh a season.

Shopping in the Portland area? An 18 SEER install there runs about $18,510 to $22,310.

Top-tier systems are where bids spread widest. Figure $24,020 to $28,950 for 20 SEER in Oregon; premium Lennox models run about $35,240 (XP20) and $46,470 or more (SL25XPV).

Tip: Armstrong Air belongs to the same parent company as Lennox and is often quoted lower for comparable equipment. Ask for both prices.

Compared on electricity alone, 20 SEER wins: 3,631 kWh a season, a 27% cut from 14 SEER and 54% from 9 SEER. In Oregon, though, the price premium is bigger than the ten-year saving.

How Oregon's Climate Shapes Your AC

Beyond size (an average-size unit for a Zone 3 home), Oregon's climate affects which equipment and options are worth paying for.

U.S. climate regions map (1 cool to 5 hot)

Climate zones run from 1 (cool) to 5 (hot); Oregon is in Zone 3.

Mild summers. Fewer hot days mean fewer run hours, so a premium SEER takes longer to pay back in Oregon. For small homes or a few rooms, ductless heads can be the cheaper path.

Smoky summers. Ash and smoke clog coils and filters fast. Change filters more often in fire season, and ask whether your air handler can take a better one.

Heat and sun. A condenser baking in direct sun works harder. Put it on the shaded side if you can, keep open space around it, and check that attic ducts are sealed.

Timing: with few peak weeks a year, OR installers are rarely booked solid. Collect two or three quotes and take your time.

SEER Explained in Plain Numbers

A SEER rating answers one question: how much cooling per unit of electricity? Divide capacity by SEER and you get the draw.

Here: 42,000 BTU ÷ 14 SEER ≈ 3,000 W, plus about 300 W for the blower – roughly 3.3 kW whenever the system runs. Multiply by hours and your rate and you have the bill.

Labels may say SEER2 instead. It is the same idea under a tougher test, so the number is a bit lower for identical equipment.
