New Jersey HVAC Replacement Cost (2027): AC and Heat Pump Prices
Adjust your home size & electric cost in New Jersey
Most homes in New Jersey come in near 1,750 sq. ft. Size the cooling to that and you get about 36,000 BTU of capacity, which the trade sells as a 3-ton unit. The best-value rating here is 14 SEER, at $7,940 to $9,570 installed. Other ratings either cost more to run or cost more than they save in NJ.
New Jersey sits in Climate Zone 3: summer highs average 87.2°F, so an AC here runs about 12.3 hours a day over a season of roughly 123 days. On a 16 SEER unit that is about 3,858 kWh – near $1,120 a year at today's rates.
These prices cover a single central system on existing ducts. Split-zone homes and ductless setups price differently.

Below: installed ranges for New Jersey, the equipment share of each job, and the power each rating burns in an average season here.
| 3-ton system | Installed | Equipment | Power / season | Cooling / yr |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14 SEER | $7,940 – $9,570 | $5,000 | 4,344 kWh | $1,260 |
| 16 SEER | $10,080 – $12,150 | $6,270 | 3,858 kWh | $1,120 |
| 18 SEER | $15,350 – $18,510 | $9,420 | 3,480 kWh | $1,010 |
| 20 SEER | $21,290 – $25,660 | $12,950 | 3,177 kWh | $920 |
Think of 14 SEER as the floor and 16 SEER as the workhorse. In NJ the first costs $7,940 to $9,570, the second $10,080 to $12,150 – and the 16 runs about $150 a year cheaper. Thinking about a heat pump instead? Our heat pump calculator prices one for your home.

New Jersey Electric Rates and Your AC's Running Cost
Electricity in New Jersey costs $0.289/kWh right now, 33% above the national average of $0.217. Over the past decade the NJ rate rose about 3.55% a year. If that trend holds, power will cost near $0.41/kWh by 2036, and a 14 SEER unit will cost about $1,780 a year to run.
Hover or tap any year to see what each rating costs to run that season. Rates rise 3.55% a year, the NJ ten-year trend.
Starting point: this summer at NJ's current rate. From there the rate grows 3.55% per year, compounded, and each season cost is rounded up to $10.
The lines spread apart as rates rise. Today 9 SEER costs $1,980 a season and 14 SEER $1,260; by 2036 those become $2,800 and $1,780.

At NJ prices, 14 SEER is the value pick: each step up costs more than it saves in ten summers.
Between a 14 and an 18 SEER quote, the extra $8,060 takes about 21.9 years to return at New Jersey rates.
Total Cost to Own Each SEER in New Jersey
Buy Price vs 10-Year Running Cost: Total Cost of Ownership in NJ
Three bars per rating: what it costs to install, what it costs to cool the house for 10 summers at New Jersey rates with the rate climbing 3.55% a year, and the sum. The rating with the shortest third bar costs the least to own. Tap or hover any bar to see the addition.
Lowest 10-year total in New Jersey: 14 SEER, $23,390 ($8,630 up front, $14,760 in electricity).
How the electricity bar is built: this season at today's NJ rate, then nine more seasons, each raised by the 3.55% yearly increase NJ has averaged. Install is the typical price shown on this page. Every figure is rounded up to the next $10 separately, which can leave the parts $10 over the total.
Monthly math for New Jersey: 2.87 kW × 12.3 h/day × 30 days ≈ 1,060 kWh. At $0.289 per kWh, that is roughly $310 a month.
The Top Tier: 18-20+ SEER Prices in NJ
An 18 SEER system costs $15,350 to $18,510 installed in NJ. It trims the season to about 3,480 kWh and runs longer at low speed, which also evens out room temperatures.
In Newark-size metros, an 18 SEER system carries the same premium: about $15,780 to $19,020 installed.
At 20 SEER and above, prices climb fast: $21,290 to $25,660 for a 3-ton system here. Flagship lines go higher – a Lennox XP20 heat pump can reach $31,240, and the variable-capacity SL25XPV tops $41,190.
Tip: Lennox and Armstrong Air share a parent company. If a Lennox model appeals to you, price its Armstrong counterpart too.
A 20 SEER unit uses about 3,177 kWh a season – 27% less than 14 SEER and 53% less than an old 9 SEER unit. At NJ rates that saving does not cover the premium within ten years.
Built for New Jersey Summers and Winters
New Jersey falls in Zone 3 on the climate map, with warm summers. That sets an average-size system for the square footage, and local weather adds a few more things to plan for.
Climate zones run from 1 (cool) to 5 (hot); New Jersey is in Zone 3.
Moisture load. Sticky NJ weather rewards equipment that runs longer at lower speed, because it pulls more water out of the air. Ask the installer how the system handles humidity, not just temperature.
Shoreline homes. Salt-laden air eats outdoor coils. A protective coil coating and a regular fresh-water rinse keep a coastal NJ system running longer.
Hurricanes. In flood-prone NJ areas, set the condenser on a raised platform and strap it down. If flood water reached the unit, have it checked before you restart it.
Timing: the off-season for cooling is the best time to get several New Jersey quotes and compare them calmly.

What SEER Means for Your Bill
A SEER rating answers one question: how much cooling per unit of electricity? Divide capacity by SEER and you get the draw.
Here: 36,000 BTU ÷ 14 SEER ≈ 2,571 W, plus about 300 W for the blower – roughly 2.87 kW whenever the system runs. Multiply by hours and your rate and you have the bill.
Labels may say SEER2 instead. It is the same idea under a tougher test, so the number is a bit lower for identical equipment.
