$/kWh

Most homes in Colorado come in near 2,460 sq. ft. Size the cooling to that and you get about 45,000 BTU of capacity, which the trade sells as a 4-ton unit. A contractor-installed 14 SEER unit runs $8,020 to $9,670 in Colorado. On ten-year cost of ownership – price plus electricity – it comes out ahead of every other rating we priced.

Run time drives the bill. With cool summers (85°F average highs, Zone 1), a CO system works about 9.3 hours a day for about 103 days – 2,981 kWh a season at 16 SEER, or about $600.

These prices cover a single central system on existing ducts. Split-zone homes and ductless setups price differently.

What a New Central AC Costs in Colorado

Each row is the same 4-ton job in CO; only the efficiency changes. Watch the running-cost column: it shrinks as the price climbs.

16 SEER$10,100 – $12,170$6,2602,981 kWh$600
18 SEER$15,770 – $19,010$9,6402,682 kWh$540
20 SEER$21,450 – $25,850$13,0202,443 kWh$490

A 14 SEER single-stage unit is the budget line at $8,020 to $9,670; about $5,020 of that is equipment. Moving to 16 SEER, often a two-stage compressor, costs $10,100 to $12,170 and cuts seasonal use from 3,366 to 2,981 kWh. If the furnace is old too, run the heat pump calculator before you decide.

Colorado Electric Rates and Your AC's Running Cost

CO households pay $0.200 for each kWh, 8% below the national $0.217. Ten years of 1.88% yearly increases would put that near $0.24 by 2036, and turn today's $1,060 bill on an old 9 SEER unit into about $1,280 a year.

Point at a year (or tap it on a phone) for the season cost of every rating. The lines climb 1.88% a year, matching how CO electric rates moved over the last decade.

The first point applies CO's current rate to this season; every point after it adds another year of the 1.88% average increase. Dollar figures are rounded up to the next $10.

The space between the top and bottom lines is money an old unit burns every summer. Summed over ten seasons, it comes to about $4,170 between 9 and 14 SEER in CO.

Verdict for CO: 14 SEER. Higher ratings cut the bill, but not by enough to cover their cost here.

Choosing 18 SEER over 14 adds $8,440 here and takes about 41.3 years to come back, even with 1.88% yearly rate increases.

After 10 years, 14 SEER is the cheapest system to own in Colorado: $16,050 all-in ($8,720 installed + $7,340 of electricity).

How the electricity bar is built: this season at today's CO rate, then nine more seasons, each raised by the 1.88% yearly increase CO has averaged. Install is the typical price shown on this page. Every figure is rounded up to the next $10 separately, which can leave the parts $10 over the total.

Expect about $200 a month for cooling in season: 980 kWh from a 3.51 kW system running some 9.3 hours a day, priced at $0.200.

Is 18 or 20 SEER Worth It in Colorado?

Above 16 SEER, systems move to variable-speed or two-stage compressors, and many are sold as heat pumps. An 18 SEER install in Colorado costs $15,770 to $19,010 and uses about 2,682 kWh a season.

Shopping in the Denver area? An 18 SEER install there runs about $16,400 to $19,760.

The 20 SEER range in Colorado is $21,450 to $25,850. Name brands add more on top: about $31,470 for a Lennox XP20, past $41,490 for an SL25XPV.

Tip: Lennox and Armstrong Air share a parent company. If a Lennox model appeals to you, price its Armstrong counterpart too.

The power saving is real: about 2,443 kWh a season at 20 SEER, 27% below 14 SEER and 54% below 9 SEER. At CO rates that saving does not cover the premium within ten years.

How Colorado's Climate Shapes Your AC

Beyond size (an average-size unit for a Zone 1 home), Colorado's climate affects which equipment and options are worth paying for.

U.S. climate regions map (1 cool to 5 hot)

Climate zones run from 1 (cool) to 5 (hot); Colorado is in Zone 1.

Hailstorms. Protective grilles or a hail guard keep the outdoor coil working. After a storm, look for flattened fins on the sides of the unit.

Mountain air. Cool nights at elevation help, but rated capacity shrinks in thin air. Size by a Manual J run for your location.

Smoke season. During wildfire smoke the system recirculates indoor air, so the filter does the work. A higher-MERV filter helps if your blower and filter slot can handle it; ask the installer.

Four seasons. Buying an AC in Colorado is a good moment to price a heat pump as well. At equal SEER the cooling cost is the same; the difference is the winter bill.

Timing: book in spring or early fall. Installers are less busy then, and you avoid a rushed decision in July.

SEER Explained in Plain Numbers

A SEER rating answers one question: how much cooling per unit of electricity? Divide capacity by SEER and you get the draw.

Here: 45,000 BTU ÷ 14 SEER ≈ 3,214 W, plus about 300 W for the blower – roughly 3.51 kW whenever the system runs. Multiply by hours and your rate and you have the bill.

Labels may say SEER2 instead. It is the same idea under a tougher test, so the number is a bit lower for identical equipment.
