Start with the house: 2,040 sq. ft. is the AZ norm, and at that size the load math points to a 4-ton system, about 45,000 BTU. Budget $10,100 to $12,170 for a 16 SEER system, all-in. At Arizona electric rates, that rating returns the most money over ten summers.

Arizona sits in Climate Zone 4: summer highs average 96.7°F, so an AC here runs about 13.3 hours a day over a season of roughly 133 days. On a 16 SEER unit that is about 5,506 kWh – near $1,000 a year at today's rates.

We price one central AC or heat pump on working ductwork. Big houses often split the load across two systems, and ductless heads are a separate quote.

Same house, same ducts, four efficiency levels. These AZ ranges include the outdoor unit, the matching indoor coil, labor and hookup.

20 SEER$21,450 – $25,850$13,0204,511 kWh$820

New central ACs in Arizona must meet the federal Southeast/Southwest efficiency minimum, which 14 SEER equipment misses. In practice 16 SEER, at $10,100 to $12,170 with $6,260 of hardware, is the entry point; it uses about 5,506 kWh a season. Thinking about a heat pump instead? Running Cost vs. Price: the AZ Math

At $0.181/kWh, Arizona power is 17% below the $0.217 U.S. average. The rate here has grown about 2.02% a year, so the chart compounds that same rise for each rating, year by year.

Each line is one SEER rating; touch or hover a year to read its dollar figures. The climb is the 2.02% yearly increase AZ rates showed over ten years.

2026 = this season at AZ's current rate. Each later year compounds the historic 2.02%/yr rise; costs rounded up to $10.

Over the next ten summers, keeping a 9 SEER unit costs about $19,350 in electricity; a 16 SEER system needs about $10,930 for the same cooling.

Lowest 10-year total in Arizona: 16 SEER, $21,910 ($10,980 up front, $10,930 in electricity).

Includes energy inflation: electricity = this season's cost at today's AZ rate, then each of the next nine seasons raised by the historic 2.02%/yr rate increase. Install = the typical installed price on this page. Each figure is rounded up to the next $10 on its own, so the two parts can add up to $10 more than the total. 14 SEER is left out: it is below the federal minimum for new central AC installs in Arizona.

The formula is draw × hours × rate. A 4-ton 16 SEER system draws about 3.11 kW; at 13.3 hours a day for 30 days that is about 1,242 kWh, or $230 a month at $0.181/kWh.

Premium Efficiency in Arizona: 18 SEER and Up

Arizona bids for 18 SEER run $15,770 to $19,010. Most of the premium buys the compressor and controls, and the saving shows up as about 4,953 kWh a season instead of 5,506.

Around Phoenix, budget roughly $16,580 to $19,980 for 18 SEER – the metro premium applies at every rating.

At 20 SEER and above, prices climb fast: $21,450 to $25,850 for a 4-ton system here. Flagship lines go higher – a Lennox XP20 heat pump can reach $31,470, and the variable-capacity SL25XPV tops $41,490.

Tip: sister brands can save real money. Armstrong Air is owned by Lennox's parent company and usually costs less for a similar unit.

The power saving is real: about 4,511 kWh a season at 20 SEER, 27% below 14 SEER and 54% below 9 SEER. In Arizona, though, the price premium is bigger than the ten-year saving.

Arizona Weather and What It Means for Your System

Beyond size (a larger-than-average unit for a Zone 4 home), Arizona's climate affects which equipment and options are worth paying for.

U.S. climate regions map (1 cool to 5 hot)

Climate zones run from 1 (cool) to 5 (hot); Arizona is in Zone 4.

Dry heat. Long, hot days mean long run hours, so efficiency pays back faster here than in most states. Ducts in a hot attic can lose much of the cooling; have them sealed and insulated when the system is replaced.

Monsoon season. Humid spells late in summer make evaporative coolers weak, which is one reason many AZ homes rely on refrigerated AC.

Wildfire risk. Keep dry brush and debris clear of the condenser, and plan for smoky weeks with a tighter filter and a fresh-air intake you can close.

Timing: a mid-summer breakdown leaves you no time to compare bids. If your system is aging, get quotes in the off-season.

How SEER Ratings Work

SEER is the cooling a unit delivers over a season divided by the electricity it uses. Higher SEER, same cooling, smaller bill.

The math also works in reverse. A 45,000 BTU system rated 16 SEER draws about 45,000 ÷ 16 = 2,813 W at the compressor. Add roughly 300 W for the indoor blower, and the whole system pulls about 3.11 kW while running.

Newer labels show SEER2, a stricter test that prints a slightly lower number for the same machine. Compare SEER to SEER, or SEER2 to SEER2.
