Home Heating Cost in Wyoming (2027): Natural Gas vs Oil vs Electric
Heating costs for your home size in Wyoming
Fuel choice moves a heating bill more than almost anything else, so we priced all five side by side for Wyoming. Rates are today's state averages, the load comes from Climate Region #1 and your square footage, and the equipment is a standard mid-efficiency setup, as in our heating cost calculator.
Take a 2,280 sq. ft. Wyoming home: natural gas is the low-cost fuel at about $1,900 a season, and heating oil sits at the other end near $6,220. Same house, same winter: a gap of about $4,330.
Wyoming Heating Cost per Season, Fuel by Fuel
| Fuel & equipment | Price | Season use | Cost / season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural gasnatural gas boiler, 82 AFUE | $1.38per therm | 1,369therms | ~$1,900 |
| Electric heat pumpductless, ~2.9 COP | $0.169per kWh | 14,918kWh | ~$2,530 |
| Propanepropane boiler, 82 AFUE | $2.25per gal | 1,495gals | ~$3,370 |
| Electric baseboardresistance heat | $0.169per kWh | 31,893kWh | ~$5,400 |
| Heating oiloil boiler, 82 AFUE | $6.30per gal | 986gals | ~$6,220 |
Rounded up to $10. Rates are current Wyoming averages; the load is a 2,280 sq. ft. home at the insulation level you pick above. Same method as the heating cost calculator.
A Season of Heat, Fuel by Fuel

Season = the modeled Wyoming heating load on standard mid-efficiency equipment; fuels ranked like the heating cost calculator (pellet and wood stoves are manual-load and stay unranked).
What 10 Winters of Heat Could Cost in Wyoming
A fuel that wins this winter can lose later if its price climbs faster. The electric lines below rise at Wyoming's own electricity trend, about 1.62% a year from 2013 to 2023. For natural gas, heating oil and propane our data has no comparable history, so you choose: hold them at today's price, or let them climb at the electricity pace. Tap or hover any winter to read the numbers.
Season costs at average insulation; winter 1 is today's prices. Totals rounded up to $10.
With natural gas, oil and propane held at today's prices, 10 winters on natural gas add up to about $18,920, and on heating oil to about $62,140.
How Wyoming Winters Set the Heating Load
Wyoming falls in Climate Region #1, the coldest band on the map below. Winter afternoons average about 32°F and nights drop to around 11°F, so a furnace or boiler here runs long cycles for months, and heat is the biggest energy cost of the year.
Weather factors that affect heating in Wyoming:
Windy cold. Wind raises the heating load by driving outside air through leaks. Weatherstripping and sealing the rim joist often pay back faster than any equipment upgrade.
Drifts. Plan where the snow will pile before the outdoor unit and the furnace vents go in. A raised stand and vents set above the drift line keep the system breathing through a heavy winter.
Cold-snap failures. A heating breakdown during a hard freeze can mean burst pipes by morning. A fall tune-up, spare filters and a temperature alert on the thermostat are cheap insurance.
High elevation in Wyoming means less oxygen for a burner, so fuel-burning furnaces are set to a lower firing rate. Ask every bidder in Wyoming to confirm the altitude adjustment. Order a new furnace or boiler before the first deep freeze, ideally in late summer. Midwinter installs are rushed jobs priced for urgency.
Three Things That Change the Number
Walls and attic. Insulation moves the load about 12% between average and poor, and the same between average and well insulated. That is roughly $230 a season with natural gas here.
Burner efficiency. The table assumes a mid-efficiency boiler at 82 AFUE. A condensing unit at 93 AFUE burns less fuel for the same heat, about $230 a season less on natural gas here. An old 62 AFUE unit burns about $620 more.
Ductwork. Bare ducts lose about 17% of a furnace's heat in the calculator's duct model. Sealing and insulating them recovers most of it. Boilers and ductless heat pumps have no such loss.
How a Heat Pump Changes the Electric Bill
If your home heats with baseboards, the heat-pump row is the upgrade path. In Wyoming the model credits a heat pump with about 2.2 kWh of heat per kWh, counting the efficiency a heat pump loses in hard cold, so the season drops from roughly $5,400 to $2,530, about $2,880 less every winter. Only natural gas costs less here.
Heating Cost Questions for Wyoming
What heats a Wyoming house for the least money?
At current rates the winner is natural gas, about $1,900 a season for this house; a heat pump follows at about $2,530. Natural gas counts only if the street has a natural gas main.
What is better insulation worth on a Wyoming heating bill?
Using natural gas, poor insulation pushes this 2,280 sq. ft. house to about $2,120 a season, and good insulation brings it down to about $1,670. The difference, about $460, comes back every winter.
Does it pay to replace an oil boiler in Wyoming?
Today's numbers favor the switch: about $6,220 a season on heating oil against about $1,900 on natural gas. That is roughly $43,220 over 10 winters if prices hold, before any installation cost. The natural gas route works only where a natural gas line can reach the property.
Pellet and wood stoves can heat cheaply too, but they are manual-load fuels: we price them in the pellet stove calculator and leave them out of the ranking, as the heating cost calculator does.
Fine print: estimates, not bills. The fuel prices are Wyoming averages and the heat load is modeled, so treat the figures as a fair comparison of fuels rather than a forecast of your statement.
