Pellet Stove Cost Calculator 2027: Installed Price & Fuel
Enter your home size, stove type and a few install options, and this calculator prices the whole pellet stove job: the stove (hopper and blower included), installer labor for your region, and the extras quotes often add later, like vent pipe, hearth protection and a thermostat. Expect roughly $6,630 when venting is already in place, and $20,010 to $30,730 for a full install with new pipe and fire protection. Know the ballpark and a padded bid is easy to spot.

How to Use the Pellet Stove Calculator
Labor is priced for your part of the country, so the closer your answers match the house, the closer the estimate gets to a real quote.
- Home size (sq ft). This sets the stove size. Past about 2,300 sq ft, the estimate prices in more than one stove.
- Pellet stove type. Freestanding, fireplace insert, or mobile home ready (a freestanding unit with extra certification for manufactured housing). Changing it resets the venting fields below.
- Venting. An insert breathes through your existing chimney. A freestanding stove needs steel pipe, even if it ties into a masonry chimney with a connector kit, so pick steel pipe in that case.
- Install venting. Pick steel pipe (double-wall, run above the roofline) or a stainless chimney liner to price new venting, or “No” if proper venting is already in place. Inserts default to “No”, but many insert makers call for a stainless liner, and a cracked or crumbling flue always needs one. Get the chimney inspected first. If the installer says liner, pick it and re-run the numbers.
- Fireproofing. Shown for freestanding and mobile home stoves, hidden for inserts. Pick the surfaces that need shielding (both, just the floor, or just the walls), or “Not needed” if you already have a code-compliant hearth. Don’t skimp here: many inspectors want a rated hearth pad under the stove and shielding on nearby walls, and your local code has the final word.
- Digital thermostat. A wall thermostat cycles the stove to hold a set temperature instead of running it flat out on one setting. Handy, but it can’t add pellets. Empty hopper, no heat.
Quick Answers
Answers use Ohio averages; energy prices updated October 2026.
Is natural gas always cheapest?
Not always, but in Ohio it is right now: natural gas buys 63,517 BTUs per dollar, ahead of a heat pump (COP 3) at 43,990. Across the 50 states and DC, natural gas comes out on top in 33.
What does a million BTUs of heat cost in Ohio?
At Ohio prices, cheapest first: natural gas $15.74, heat pump (COP 3) $22.73, propane $28.11, heating oil $42.65, electric baseboard $68.20. Wood pellets come to $21.83, not ranked: the ton price leaves out delivery. Those are heat-content prices before equipment losses, the same basis the BTU cost calculator uses.
Is a heat pump cheaper to run than natural gas in Ohio?
Not in Ohio right now. Natural gas buys 63,517 BTUs per dollar; a heat pump at a COP of 3 buys 43,990. Power would have to drop below about 16.1¢ per kWh to flip that (the Ohio average is 23.3¢), or the heat pump would need a higher COP.
Are wood pellets cheaper than natural gas or oil in Ohio?
Cheaper than oil, not natural gas, in Ohio. Pellets at $358 a ton buy 45,810 BTUs per dollar, against 63,517 for natural gas and 23,447 for heating oil. That ton price leaves out delivery, and bags to haul and ash to empty come with it, so the calculator lists pellets apart instead of ranking them; many owners run a pellet stove alongside a central system.
Is heating oil ever the cheapest option?
Not in Ohio: heating oil ranks fourth of five at 23,447 BTUs per dollar. At current prices it doesn’t come out on top in any state or DC.
Does a cheap fuel guarantee low bills?
No. At Ohio prices, natural gas burned in a worn-out 60% furnace costs about $26.24 per million BTU of heat delivered; a 95% furnace gets that down to $16.57. Sizing and leaky ducts matter too.

What Pellets Cost to Burn Each Year
A standard 40-lb bag runs about $6.50 to $9. Used as main heat, a stove goes through about a bag a day in mild weather and two or more in a cold snap. A good unit can warm roughly 2,000 to 2,500 sq ft of open floor plan.
Over a heating season, most households burn 3 to 6 tons, or 150 to 300 bags (a ton is 50 bags), depending on climate and how many hours a day the stove runs. That works out to roughly $1,000 to $2,700 a year in fuel. To see how that stacks up against oil, gas or electric heat, run the numbers in our home heating cost calculator.
Pellets also keep. Buy a pallet in summer, store it dry, and next winter’s fuel cost is locked in.
The Downsides Nobody Mentions in the Showroom
You are the fuel delivery system
Most hoppers hold around 50 lbs; bigger ones hold 80. On a 20 to 30°F day with the thermostat set near 60°F, that’s about one day of heat before somebody has to refill it. Add ash cleanout, weekly in heavy use or monthly if it only runs evenings. Leave for a long winter weekend with the stove as your only heat, and you’re gambling with your water pipes.
Heat stays close to the stove
Even with the blower on, a pellet stove heats its own room and whatever drifts upstairs. Far bedrooms stay chilly, because there’s no ductwork or radiator loop to push the warmth around. If you need even, whole-house heat, look at a forced-air furnace or a hot-water boiler instead.
Storage takes real space
Wet pellets crumble into useless sawdust, so a tarp outside won’t cut it and a damp shed is risky. Plan on a dry garage or basement. On the coldest days you may haul a 40-lb bag to the stove twice before dinner.
Where a Pellet Stove Makes Sense
As the only heat for a whole house, it’s a tough sell. As a backup, it’s hard to beat. The auger and fans need a little electricity, so a small generator or a battery backup unit keeps it running through a power outage, and the family stays warm on cheap fuel. Comparing it with a gas fireplace? Price both before you decide.
