Heating costs for your home size in Utah

2,800 sq. ft.

Fuel choice moves a heating bill more than almost anything else, so we priced all five side by side for Utah. Rates are today's state averages, the load comes from Climate Region #2 and your square footage, and the equipment is a standard mid-efficiency setup, as in our heating cost calculator.

Pick natural gas and a 2,800 sq. ft. Utah home costs about $1,840 to heat for the season. Pick heating oil and the same season costs about $6,870.

What 10 Winters of Heat Could Cost in Utah

Today's ranking is one winter. Over 10 winters, price trends matter too. Electricity in Utah rose about 0.45% a year between 2013 and 2023 in our energy data, and both electric lines follow that trend. We have no matching long record for natural gas, heating oil or propane, so the buttons show two cases instead of a guess. Hover or tap a winter for every fuel's cost.

Each column is one heating season for the house above at average insulation. Totals are rounded up to $10.

Fossil fuels flat, electricity on its trend: the cheapest 10-winter total is natural gas at about $18,330; the most expensive is heating oil at about $68,630.

With all fuels climbing at the electricity pace, today's ranking holds for all 10 winters. The totals: about $18,710 for natural gas, about $70,050 for heating oil.

How Utah Winters Set the Heating Load

Utah is in Climate Region #2: cold winters, with days around 38°F and nights near 18°F. The heating season is long enough that a cheaper fuel or a tighter house shows up clearly on the yearly bill.

What the local weather means for heating equipment:

Snow cover. A heat pump's outdoor coil needs open air to work, and condensing furnaces breathe through low wall vents. Both need clearance from snowbanks, so ask the installer how high they mount the unit and the vents.

Freeze risk. A no-heat call is an emergency when pipes can freeze. A service visit in early fall catches worn igniters, weak capacitors and clogged filters before the busy season.

Hot summers. Here the cooling season is the big one. A heat pump is the air conditioner, and it heats in winter as a bonus: size it for summer cooling and winter heat comes along.

Altitude matters for fuel-burning equipment: above a certain elevation, manufacturers call for a reduced firing rate. Make sure any furnace quote in Utah accounts for it. Shoulder seasons are the time to shop: spring and early fall. By the first cold week, service calls pile up and quotes come back slower.

Three Things That Change the Number

  • Up the flue. Going from 82 to 93 AFUE saves about $220 a season on natural gas. Holding on to an aging 62 AFUE unit costs about $600 extra.
  • Insulation and air sealing. The model moves the load 12% either way: from average to poorly insulated, or from average to well insulated. On natural gas in Utah, each step is about $230 a season. Try the insulation buttons above the table.
  • Ductwork. Bare ducts lose about 17% of a furnace's heat in the calculator's duct model. Sealing and insulating them recovers most of it. Boilers and ductless heat pumps have no such loss.

The Heat Pump Line, Explained

If your home heats with baseboards, the heat-pump row is the upgrade path. In Utah the model credits a heat pump with about 2.5 kWh of heat per kWh, already reduced for cold-weather performance, so the season drops from roughly $5,450 to $2,250, about $3,200 less every winter. Only natural gas costs less here.

Heating Cost Questions for Utah

Which heating fuel costs least in Utah?

At current rates the winner is natural gas, about $1,840 a season for this house; a heat pump follows at about $2,250. Natural gas counts only if the street has a natural gas main.

What is better insulation worth on a Utah heating bill?

With natural gas, a poorly insulated 2,800 sq. ft. home costs about $2,060 a season and a well-insulated one about $1,620. That $450 gap repeats every winter.

Does it pay to replace an oil boiler in Utah?

On fuel cost, yes. Heating oil runs about $6,870 a season for this house; natural gas would cost about $1,840. Over 10 winters at today's prices that gap is about $50,310: the budget a conversion has to beat. The natural gas route works only where a natural gas line can reach the property.

Pellet and wood stoves stay out of the ranking because they need hand loading; see the pellet stove calculator for their costs.
