Home Heating Cost in Florida (2027): Natural Gas vs Oil vs Electric
Heating costs for your home size in Florida
How much heat does a Florida home burn in a winter, and what does it cost on each fuel? We take today's average rates for natural gas, heating oil, propane and electricity, apply a Region #5 heating load for your home size, and price the result the way our heating cost calculator does.
Heating a 1,960 sq. ft. home through a Florida winter runs from about $420 on a heat pump, the cheapest fuel here, up to roughly $1,460 on propane, the priciest.

Each row is one heating season for 1,960 sq. ft., rounded up to $10. Switch the insulation level to see how much the house itself moves the bill. Method: our heating cost calculator.
A Season of Heat, Fuel by Fuel
Same house, same winter, five fuels. Hover a bar for the use and the rate behind it.
Season = the modeled Florida heating load on standard mid-efficiency equipment; fuels ranked like the heating cost calculator (pellet and wood stoves are manual-load and stay unranked).
Heating Costs Over the Next 10 Winters
This chart carries the season costs forward 10 winters. Electricity follows its Florida track record, about 3.05% a year (2013 to 2023, energy database). Natural gas, heating oil and propane have no long series in our data, so they get two clear cases rather than an invented rate. Hover or tap a column for that winter's costs.
Season costs at average insulation; winter 1 is today's prices. Totals rounded up to $10.
Fossil fuels flat, electricity on its trend: the cheapest 10-winter total is a heat pump at about $4,770; the most expensive is propane at about $14,550.
Why Florida Weather Shapes the Heating Bill
Region #5 on the map means mild winters: about 70°F by day and 47°F by night in Florida. A small seasonal load keeps every fuel's bill low, which changes what is worth paying for in equipment.
Weather factors that affect heating in Florida:
Summer-driven bills. Cooling, not heating, is the larger energy cost in Florida. Choosing a heat pump at the next AC replacement adds efficient winter heat for little extra.
Storm prep. Every heating system here depends on electricity for fans or controls, and hurricanes can knock power out for days. Anchor the outdoor unit, raise it above flood height and plan for backup power.
Sea spray. Salt carried on the wind eats at outdoor coils and cabinet screws. A coated coil, a site away from the spray and a yearly rinse keep a coastal heat pump running longer.
Across the Southeast, many homes heat with the same heat pump that cools them. Its winter cost is the heat pump row in the table, at $0.183 per kWh. Heat is needed only for a few weeks a year, so most homes heat with the same system that cools them. Service it in spring or fall, before the busy summer.
What Moves the Bill Besides the Fuel
- Insulation and air sealing. The model moves the load 12% either way: from average to poorly insulated, or from average to well insulated. On a heat pump in Florida, each step is about $50 a season. Try the insulation buttons above the table.
- The ducts. A forced-air system with bare ducts loses roughly 17% of its output on the way to the rooms, according to the calculator's duct model. Ductless systems and radiators skip that loss.
- Up the flue. Going from 82 to 93 AFUE saves about $90 a season on natural gas. Holding on to an aging 62 AFUE unit costs about $240 extra.
How a Heat Pump Changes the Electric Bill
Electric baseboard turns each kWh into one kWh of heat. A heat pump moves heat from outdoors instead, delivering about 2.9 kWh of warmth per kWh in this model. At $0.183 per kWh, that cuts the electric heating bill from about $1,170 to about $420 a season, a saving of roughly $760. In Florida that makes it the lowest-cost fuel in the table.
Heating Cost Questions for Florida
What is the cheapest way to heat a home in Florida?
Right now it is a heat pump, at about $420 a season for 1,960 sq. ft. The runner-up is natural gas at about $740. Unlike natural gas, a heat pump works anywhere the house has electric service.
Should a Florida home on heating oil convert?
On fuel cost, yes. Heating oil runs about $1,170 a season for this house; a heat pump would cost about $420. Over 10 winters at today's prices that gap is about $7,470: the budget a conversion has to beat.
What is better insulation worth on a Florida heating bill?
With a heat pump, a poorly insulated 1,960 sq. ft. home costs about $470 a season and a well-insulated one about $370. That $100 gap repeats every winter.
Pellet and wood stoves can heat cheaply too, but they are manual-load fuels: we price them in the pellet stove calculator and leave them out of the ranking, as the heating cost calculator does.
How to read this page: every figure is a model estimate built on today's Florida average rates. It ranks fuels fairly against each other; your own bill depends on the weather, the building and the equipment.
