How to Use the Laminate Flooring Calculator

  1. Add your rooms. Type each room’s length and width in feet, rounded up, then tap “Add room” for the next one. Split an L-shaped room into two rectangles.
  2. Flooring type. Leave it on Laminate, or switch to Engineered Wood to compare a real-wood surface.
  3. Laminate quality. Budget, Mid Range or Luxury. This one choice can swing the total by hundreds.
  4. Water resistance. Yes adds the water-resistant upgrade. Skip it in dry rooms; keep it anywhere a leak is a real possibility.
  5. Remove old floor. Pick what’s down now. On a 200 sq ft room, pulling up carpet adds roughly $220 to $300. Old laminate or hardwood runs about $290 to $550, and tile, the messy one, about $570 to $770.
  6. Install subfloor. New plywood adds roughly $2.10 to $4.05 per sq ft, depending on 1/4-inch or 3/4-inch sheets. Not sure you need it? Price it both ways.

Hit Calculate Cost for a low, mid and high figure. The middle one is your target, and fair bids usually land inside the range. Prices follow your state, and floors over 300 sq ft get a slightly lower rate per foot.

Quick Answers

Answers use Ohio averages; energy prices updated October 2026.

Will wood floors gap in winter in Ohio?

A little. With average winter lows around 20°F, Ohio homes run the heat long enough to dry the air, so thin seasonal gaps in solid wood are normal. Engineered wood moves less.

Is electric radiant floor heat expensive to run in Ohio?

Electric floor mats are resistance heat. At the Ohio average of 23.3¢ per kWh, that’s about $68.20 per million BTU, roughly 4.3 times the fuel cost of natural gas. Fine for warming a bathroom floor; for whole-house heat, a heat pump at a COP of 3 does the job for about $22.73.

Can I put hardwood in a basement?

Not solid hardwood. Basements sit below grade and stay damper than the rest of the house, so use engineered wood, vinyl plank or tile, with a moisture barrier if the slab calls for one.

Laminate or vinyl plank for a kitchen or bath?

Vinyl plank. Standard laminate has a wood-fiber core that swells if water sits on it; vinyl doesn’t. Some laminates are sold as water-resistant, so read the warranty before you buy.

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Enough to cover cuts and mistakes, plus a box for future repairs. Straight layouts waste the least; diagonal and herringbone patterns waste more.

Does new flooring need to acclimate?

Solid wood and laminate usually do. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, which typically call for leaving the boxes in the room at normal living temperature before install; skipping it can void the warranty.

How Much Does Laminate Flooring Cost?

For a typical 200 sq ft bedroom, before tear-out or subfloor, expect these installed totals:

  • Budget: about $1,160 to $1,580 (roughly $5.80 to $7.90 per sq ft).
  • Mid-grade: about $1,400 to $1,910, where most homeowners land.
  • Premium: about $1,600 to $2,180 for the same room.

The gap comes down to the brand on the box and how the planks are built: wear layer, core density, locking joints. Where you live moves it another 10% or so either way.

Standard or Water-Resistant?

Regular laminate is fine in bedrooms, living rooms and hallways. Near a tub, toilet or washer, one leak can swell the seams for good.

The upgrade costs less than most people expect: about 30 to 40 cents more per sq ft, or roughly $60 to $80 on a 200 sq ft room. In a bathroom or laundry room, that’s cheap insurance. If the floor is part of a bigger wet-room job, our bathroom remodel calculator covers the rest.

Do You Need a New Subfloor?

Laminate floats over whatever is under it, so every dip and hump shows through. Warped, bouncy or out of level? Replace it. Flat and solid? Keep your money, and be wary of an installer who pushes new subfloor without putting a level on the old one first.

Laminate Brands, Cheapest to Priciest

Lowest cost: Style Selections, TrafficMaster. Middle: Quick-Step, Home Decorators Collection. Top tier: Pergo, Home Legend.

Cheap lines scratch and lose their click joints sooner. Want ten-plus years out of the floor? Spend a bit more per foot. Covering a rental or a spare room? Budget planks are fine.

Laminate Questions Homeowners Ask

Can laminate go over my old floor?

Often, if it’s flat, dry and firmly attached. Carpet always comes up.

How much extra laminate should I order?

The calculator already adds 5% for waste. Push that toward 10% if the room has lots of closets, doorways or odd angles, because cuts eat planks fast. A spare box in the garage also saves you when a board gets gouged five years from now (matching dye lots later is a gamble).

Is the cheapest laminate worth it?

In low-traffic rooms, yes. Kitchens, entries and homes with big dogs justify mid-grade.
