2027 Maryland HVAC Replacement Cost Guide: Install and Running Costs
Adjust your home size & electric cost in Maryland
Every price on this page is built around a 2,200 sq. ft. home, the common size in Maryland, cooled by a 4-ton system of about 45,000 BTU. Budget $10,030 to $12,080 for a 16 SEER system, all-in. At Maryland electric rates, that rating returns the most money over ten summers.
Maryland sits in Climate Zone 3: summer highs average 88.4°F, so an AC here runs about 12.3 hours a day over a season of roughly 123 days. On a 16 SEER unit that is about 4,709 kWh – near $1,230 a year at today's rates.
We price one central AC or heat pump on working ductwork. Big houses often split the load across two systems, and ductless heads are a separate quote.
What a New Central AC Costs in Maryland
Each row is the same 4-ton job in MD; only the efficiency changes. Watch the running-cost column: it shrinks as the price climbs.
| 4-ton system | Installed | Equipment | Power / season | Cooling / yr |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14 SEER | $7,960 – $9,590 | $4,980 | 5,317 kWh | $1,390 |
| 16 SEER | $10,030 – $12,080 | $6,210 | 4,709 kWh | $1,230 |
| 18 SEER | $15,660 – $18,870 | $9,570 | 4,236 kWh | $1,110 |
| 20 SEER | $21,290 – $25,660 | $12,930 | 3,858 kWh | $1,010 |
In MD, the realistic starting point is 16 SEER: federal rules for the southern region keep 14 SEER units off new installs. Expect $10,030 to $12,080 for 16 SEER, about $6,210 of it equipment, and 4,709 kWh a season. Thinking about a heat pump instead? Our heat pump calculator prices one for your home.
What the Same AC Costs in Maryland Cities
City size and metro labor costs nudge the MD price up or down. Same 16 SEER system, priced by city:
16 SEER central AC, installed
- Baltimorepop. 565,000$10,390 – $12,520
- Columbiapop. 105,000$10,250 – $12,360
- Germantownpop. 91,000$10,130 – $12,210
- Frederickpop. 86,000$10,120 – $12,200
- Silver Springpop. 81,000$10,220 – $12,310
Each city figure is the MD range scaled by city size and metro area (within ±6%), the same factor the city guide uses.
Maryland Electric Rates and Your AC's Running Cost
At $0.261/kWh, Maryland power is 20% above the $0.217 U.S. average. The rate here has grown about 1.95% a year, so the chart compounds that same rise for each rating, year by year.
Point at a year (or tap it on a phone) for the season cost of every rating. The lines climb 1.95% a year, matching how MD electric rates moved over the last decade.
The first point applies MD's current rate to this season; every point after it adds another year of the 1.95% average increase. Dollar figures are rounded up to the next $10.
The space between the top and bottom lines is money an old unit burns every summer. Summed over ten seasons, it comes to about $10,350 between 9 and 16 SEER in MD.
Upgrade Payback Finder: Your Old AC vs a New One
Pick the unit you have and the one you are considering. Figures are for a 4-ton system at Maryland electric rates ($0.261/kWh, rising 1.95% a year).
| Installed price of the new system | $10,900 |
| Electricity saved, first year | $950 |
| Saved over 10 summers (rates rising) | $10,350 |
| Payback | 10.5 years |
| Net after 10 summers | -$560 |
Savings alone fall short: 9 to 16 SEER is still $560 behind after 10 summers in MD.
Replacing a working unit: the whole install counts as the cost. Buying new anyway? See the 14 SEER comparison table further down.
Old 9 SEER vs New 14-20 SEER in Maryland

| 10-Year Net (Rates Rising) | - | -$40 | -$560 | -$5,330 | -$10,370 |
Payback counts the 1.95% yearly rate rise; the green column is the best ten-year value. Note: 14 SEER rows are for comparison. New installs in MD must beat the regional efficiency minimum.
In Maryland, where new systems start above 14 SEER, 16 SEER has the lowest ten-year cost: $24,320 with ten summers of power.
Price Plus Running Cost: Maryland Totals
Buy Price vs 10-Year Running Cost: Total Cost of Ownership in MD
For each SEER rating: the installed price, 10 years of cooling electricity at Maryland rates (rising 1.95% a year), and the two added together. The shortest total bar is the cheapest system to own. Hover or tap a bar for the math.
Lowest 10-year total in Maryland: 16 SEER, $24,320 ($10,900 up front, $13,430 in electricity).
Includes energy inflation: electricity = this season's cost at today's MD rate, then each of the next nine seasons raised by the historic 1.95%/yr rate increase. Install = the typical installed price on this page. Each figure is rounded up to the next $10 on its own, so the two parts can add up to $10 more than the total. 14 SEER is left out: it is below the federal minimum for new central AC installs in Maryland.
Monthly math for Maryland: 3.11 kW × 12.3 h/day × 30 days ≈ 1,149 kWh. At $0.261 per kWh, that is roughly $300 a month.
Premium Efficiency in Maryland: 18 SEER and Up
Expect $15,660 to $18,870 for an 18 SEER system in Maryland. It cools the same house on about 4,236 kWh a season, against the 4,709 kWh a 16 SEER unit needs.
Around Baltimore, budget roughly $16,220 to $19,550 for 18 SEER – the metro premium applies at every rating.
A 4-ton 20 SEER heat pump costs $21,290 to $25,660 in MD. Brand matters at this level: a Lennox XP20 can cost $31,240, and the SL25XPV more than $41,180.
Tip: Armstrong Air belongs to the same parent company as Lennox and is often quoted lower for comparable equipment. Ask for both prices.
A 20 SEER unit uses about 3,858 kWh a season – 27% less than 14 SEER and 54% less than an old 9 SEER unit. At MD rates that saving does not cover the premium within ten years.
How Maryland's Climate Shapes Your AC
Zone 3 summers in Maryland are warm; that alone calls for a larger-than-average unit. The weather also brings its own wear and tear.
Climate zones run from 1 (cool) to 5 (hot); Maryland is in Zone 3.
Muggy summers. In Maryland, a good share of the work is drying the air. Oversized systems short-cycle and never get there, so right-sizing matters more than raw capacity. Keep the condensate drain line clear, too – algae clogs it in damp climates.
Shoreline homes. Salt-laden air eats outdoor coils. A protective coil coating and a regular fresh-water rinse keep a coastal MD system running longer.
The heating question. With winter lows near 25°F, many MD homes pair the AC with a furnace. If you are replacing both, price a heat pump: one machine heats and cools.
When to buy: early spring, before the first heat wave fills MD installers' calendars.

How SEER Ratings Work
SEER is the cooling a unit delivers over a season divided by the electricity it uses. Higher SEER, same cooling, smaller bill.
The math also works in reverse. A 45,000 BTU system rated 16 SEER draws about 45,000 ÷ 16 = 2,813 W at the compressor. Add roughly 300 W for the indoor blower, and the whole system pulls about 3.11 kW while running.
Newer labels show SEER2, a stricter test that prints a slightly lower number for the same machine. Compare SEER to SEER, or SEER2 to SEER2.

Ask for a written Manual J. Bigger is not better: an oversized system costs more and controls humidity worse.
