$/kWh

Start with the house: 1,960 sq. ft. is the FL norm, and at that size the load math points to a 4-ton system, about 45,000 BTU. Our pick for Florida is 16 SEER. Expect $10,030 to $12,080 for the full install; the ten-year charts below show why it beats the other ratings.

Plan for about 143 days of cooling a year in FL, around 14.3 hours a day, under 93.1°F average highs. A 16 SEER system turns that into about 6,365 kWh, so cooling costs near $1,170 a year here.

Figures assume one ducted central system. Ductless mini-splits are priced on their own, and homes that need more than five tons usually get two smaller units.

Central AC Installation Cost in Florida

Here is what a 4-ton install costs in Florida at each efficiency level. Equipment is about 58% of a 14 SEER bid; labor, refrigerant lines, the pad and electrical work make up the rest.

4-ton systemInstalledEquipmentPower / seasonCooling / yr
14 SEER$7,960 – $9,590$4,9807,186 kWh$1,320
16 SEER$10,030 – $12,080$6,2106,365 kWh$1,170
18 SEER$15,660 – $18,870$9,5705,726 kWh$1,050
20 SEER$21,290 – $25,660$12,9305,214 kWh$960

Because Florida falls in the federal southern efficiency region, new systems start above 14 SEER. A 16 SEER install runs $10,030 to $12,080 ($6,210 in hardware) and needs about 6,365 kWh a season. A heat pump cools at the same SEER and heats as well – see the heat pump calculator.

Florida AC Prices, City by City

Where you live inside Florida moves the bid. Metro crews carry more overhead; small-town installers usually less. The same 16 SEER system, priced for the state's largest cities:

Does a Higher SEER Pay Off in Florida?

Two numbers set your running cost: the $0.183/kWh FL rate (16% below the $0.217 national average) and how fast it grows – historically about 3.05% a year here. The chart applies both to each SEER rating.

Point at a year (or tap it on a phone) for the season cost of every rating. The lines climb 3.05% a year, matching how FL electric rates moved over the last decade.

Starting point: this summer at FL's current rate. From there the rate grows 3.05% per year, compounded, and each season cost is rounded up to $10.

Each line compounds the 3.05% yearly rate rise. By year ten a 9 SEER unit costs $2,790 a season to run here, against $1,580 for 16 SEER.

In Florida, where new systems start above 14 SEER, 16 SEER has the lowest ten-year cost: $24,290 with ten summers of power.

Cheapest over 10 years in Florida: 16 SEER at $24,290 all-in, made of $10,900 to install plus $13,400 to run.

Energy inflation is built in: season one is priced at today's FL rate, and each of the nine seasons after it costs 3.05% more than the one before, the historic yearly increase. The install figure is the typical installed price on this page. Parts and totals are each rounded up to $10, so the parts may sum $10 above the total. 14 SEER is left out: it is below the federal minimum for new central AC installs in Florida.

Expect about $250 a month for cooling in season: 1,335 kWh from a 3.11 kW system running some 14.3 hours a day, priced at $0.183.

High-Efficiency Systems: 18 and 20+ SEER

Above 16 SEER, systems move to variable-speed or two-stage compressors, and many are sold as heat pumps. An 18 SEER install in Florida costs $15,660 to $18,870 and uses about 5,726 kWh a season.

In Jacksonville-size metros, an 18 SEER system carries the same premium: about $16,340 to $19,700 installed.

Top-tier systems are where bids spread widest. Figure $21,290 to $25,660 for 20 SEER in Florida; premium Lennox models run about $31,240 (XP20) and $41,180 or more (SL25XPV).

Tip: Lennox and Armstrong Air share a parent company. If a Lennox model appeals to you, price its Armstrong counterpart too.

A 20 SEER unit uses about 5,214 kWh a season – 27% less than 14 SEER and 54% less than an old 9 SEER unit. Here the extra cost outruns the saving over ten years, so it is a comfort choice, not a money choice.

Built for Florida Summers and Winters

Zone 5 summers in Florida are hot; that alone calls for a larger-than-average unit. The weather also brings its own wear and tear.

U.S. climate regions map (1 cool to 5 hot)

Climate zones run from 1 (cool) to 5 (hot); Florida is in Zone 5.

Humidity. An AC removes moisture as well as heat. A unit sized too big cools the air fast, shuts off and leaves the house damp, so insist on a Manual J load calculation and consider a two-stage or variable-speed model that runs long at low speed.

High-wind storms. Ask for hurricane straps on the condenser and a surge protector at the disconnect. Both are small line items next to a ruined compressor.

Coastal corrosion. Salt spray shortens condenser life. Coastal homes do better with corrosion-resistant coil coatings and a unit placed out of the direct wind off the water.

Timing: a mid-summer breakdown leaves you no time to compare bids. If your system is aging, get quotes in the off-season.

Reading a SEER Rating

SEER is the cooling a unit delivers over a season divided by the electricity it uses. Higher SEER, same cooling, smaller bill.

The math also works in reverse. A 45,000 BTU system rated 16 SEER draws about 45,000 ÷ 16 = 2,813 W at the compressor. Add roughly 300 W for the indoor blower, and the whole system pulls about 3.11 kW while running.

Newer labels show SEER2, a stricter test that prints a slightly lower number for the same machine. Compare SEER to SEER, or SEER2 to SEER2.
